50 Social Laboratories

The Supreme Court case is big news. All of a sudden CSPAN is almost interesting. This morning a Northwestern law professor pointed out that federalism allows each state to be a social laboratory for the Union as a whole. Tonight, an MIT economics professor argued that Massachusetts conducted an isolated experiment in health care that is now in the process of being applied on a national scale.

This sounds like democratic experimentalism, a concept that I like very much.

Perhaps a state could self-select to experiment with sustainability? Who will it be? Anyone? Anyone?
